From an investment standpoint – 10-30 years, is $T AT&T a pickup at this price? Great divvy, big player in a changing space, but with their fingers in a lot of pies.

10-30 years hard to say no, but it will always be the lesser performer when compared to the S&P 500.

@clevers are you sure it’s just 5% annually? The hard to borrow annual interest rate is a variable one. Currently, it’s at 7.5%. I’ve 5%, but i’ve seen it up to 13 or 14%. I suppose it changes based on supply&demand.

What’s your opinion on crooked Andrew Left? Media gives him spotlight to basically fill his pockets with money. I don’t disagree with his prediction, but how can we allow Citron to have so much influence?

Does anyone else think that AT&T may be a decent addition at this point? Nice divvy, more power grab from what I can tell. Additionally, maybe a small Comcast holding could prove lucrative.

@seth-golden I notice you mostly trade s&p related vix products.. do you also trade any vol in nasdaq or Dow or gold or oil? Why or why not?

    • Profile picture of Seth Golden
Seth Golden replied 7 years ago

No, I’ve only traded S&P related as it is the largest and based on functional market thesis without deliverable assets underlying. Oil, gold, both deliverable assets. I could never offer someone a box of volatility 😉 Makes a difference in the AUM value theory.

@seth-golden a couple things. Subscription, Reuters, Barron’s, Business Insider, all of the above, or none of the above? I’ve had Motley Fool and WSJ in the past, and I thought they provided little value. On a separate topic, have you looked into Chinese tech? Seems like China in general has the most to gain in user and user growth. I see more…[Read more]

I have a subscription to Reuters and Barron’s. Only Chinese tech/commerce I trade is BABA. Of course some of the bookkeeping is fraudulent which is why I only trade them here and there.

Regardless of how terrible of a strategy it is to put all your eggs in one basket, I chose to do it anyway in one particular account. I “found” an old employer’s retirement account which had been sitting in cash for quite some time – don’t ask why. Anyway, i dumped the entire thing into $FB at $188/share. Wish me luck. I think this is where I…[Read more]

@seth-golden what tool or website do you use to track the earnings performance of companies in the S&P 500?

    • Profile picture of Seth Golden
Seth Golden replied 7 years ago

Something tells me you don’t read the weekly research reports on earnings. I embed the Reuters link in each one http://lipperalpha.financial.thomsonreuters.com/2018/04/this-week-in-earnings-9/

S&P earnings are only updated weekly. I include in the weekly research report the breakdown as well as the corresponding table.

Gordon Chang made the comment that China is the weak hand in this situation.

It’s like when you owe the bank $10000 you are in trouble but when you owe them $100M they are in trouble.

The other thing, I think anything that jacks up the price of softs like soybeans does not bode well for Chinese social stability.

    Weak position.

Wasn’t there some FB brouhaha last fall about the Russian bogeyman. Zuck was going to have to hire a ton of ad checkers and that was going to impact profits, etc.?

Just like they will forget about this kerfuffle and the next one too.

I tried to find the quote in the Michael Lewis book “The New New Thing”, but couldn’t.

Something along the lines of “If somebody tried to mention PE in the room it was like they farted.”

That’s almost the situation with NFLX and AMZN.

The market is supported by FANG stocks. Two of the four megacap names have astronomical PE ratios.

So how is PE even relevant?

@seth-golden generally speaking, safe to short UVXY again? or are you looking for a higher level of contango or other indicators, especially with the revised changes to its guts? VVIX continues to stay elevated, relatively speaking. Seems like the “ALL CLEAR” has not been announced yet.. haha.

Safer is a better word for shorting VOL and it will always be found defining that margin of safety through liquidity. With a full core holding I am continuing to look for scalps on VXX, but using UVXY for LOBs

It seems that all the products in the space are being affected by the Feb. Crash.

    Except VXX.

As for options, VXX has the best liquidity.

Bill Valentine made two remarks in the most recent Vol Views about UVXY.

    1) OTM UVXY puts are the safe way to play short vol.

    2) In a crisis like we had in early Feb., OTM UVXY calls are the

Don’t make much difference. Before, UVXY was a tracking the SPY at 5x, now it will be a mere 3X.

I don’t think this will help its liquidity though.
