Payless ShoeSource Inc. filed for chapter 11 protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, the Topeka, Kan.-based discount footwear retailer said in a statement late Monday. Payless said it intends to wind down its approximately 2,500 store locations in North America and its e-commerce operations.
