Indexes sitting near the lows of the day w/10 year yield hovering around 2.72% and VIX near 15 and off its high of the day. Tilting between contango and backwardation still on m1/m2. Might get some equity buying coming, but not certain of how the close will look as we ended at lows of session yesterday. Maintain liquidity and be prepared to…[Read more]

Staying nimble. thanks Seth.

@edgeofreason, have to maintain level head, step back and look at the forest through the trees and size positions responsibly to give oneself a long timeline to reap profits.

Volguru,
Good posting and it is a trade one should recognize along the lines of many variables and attributes specific to their person. I offer updates on my core, positioning and liquidity as a means for others to build their personal parameters. What works for Seth may not work for others for reasons of specificity. Would have to agree as I…[Read more]

That’s certainly one way to review the recent activity and action to take for which I respect wholly. I’m in and building!

Seth Golden started the topic Goldman Calling for 10-20% pullback in the forum S&P 500 Analysts Notes 6 years, 9 months ago
Strategists at the U.S. bank say signals are flashing for a drop of 10 to 20 percent in equity prices in the coming months. Goldman’s risk appetite gauge is hovering near a record high, indicating a sharp rise in investor optimism, while traders seem complacent about political risks like Italy’s national elections, they say. Still, the risk of a f…[Read more]

Grabbed on short lot with another limit order on VXX around $30 in case we have a rough close. Europe closing, 10 year yield above 2.70% grabbing all the headlines so far! Stay liquid, just another day, underlying market fundamentals very much in tact with good consumer spending data this morning.

Seth Golden replied to the topic Short VXX and UVXY with protection against Black Swan in the forum UVXY, TVIX, VXX, XIV, SVXY, VIXY, VMAX, VMIN 6 years, 9 months ago
@ronturkey @ultrafeel Yes I did lean on the side of the market cycle as I feel its prudent to do so. If we were earlier in the cycle I’d push the envelope, but we aren’t as we see in both chronological terms as well as inflationary terms. As it were in 2015 with me, I went into that spike with over 70% cash and was still found wanting due to the…[Read more]

This was a great question and great comments and insight offered!! $10k with necessary risk management, liquidity/time doesn’t seem worth it at this stage of the bull cycle. Admittedly that’s my opinion and largely because of the sums of money in question don’t offer a path to riches. But yes, I’d like to believe and offer that there is…[Read more]

Seth Golden replied to the topic VIX futures and backwardation in the forum UVXY, TVIX, VXX, XIV, SVXY, VIXY, VMAX, VMIN 6 years, 9 months ago
Regarding wide spread between m1 (feb. Vix Futures), it’s presently 1.25 roll yield (spread). That’s somewhat narrower than the typical that I like to see based on history. I like to see 1.50 roll yield minimum. But, it is the best roll yield of the week. Much of the week it was less than .80, so it definitely expanded which is good news. Even…[Read more]

Pschology: I generally align myself to focusing on VIX Futures as opposed to the indexes. VIX futures will tell us what the SPX options sentiment is through the VIX level. While we know that the SPX put/call ration is heavily skewed in favor of puts lately, what’s not mentioned is “what are the probabilities that these get put or taken off as the…[Read more]

Vixcentral.com, under the historical prices tab can show you what the term structure would look like in such a bear market situation. Simply adjust the date to see it in continuum through the 2008 cycle. http://vixcentral.com But you’ll have to help me understand the term “longer-term bear market” to lend a little more color on the subject.

So here we see term structure lifting and flattening today even if just a bit. Taken near peak VIX level today-
how does it translate this upside (through out the whole structure) for the possibility of a correction in the S&P?
-
Another interesting day… Its quite interesting how VXX/UVXY fall/rise on weekly basis. Its surely tough to predict.
-
Actually the S&P or SPX options determine the structure of the curve
-
It’s not usually so aligned as we’ve seen in recent days/weeks. Over time all will resume usual characteristics

Covered the VXX $27.80 here at $27.40 for a nice scalp on the day. Core unaffected other than some drawdown on the day.
-
Why are these moves not being posted in “trade alerts?” Following the forum in real time is unrealistic.
Also, why no add to the core on a rare move up 10%+ on UVXY/TVIX, what is the target to add more to the core?
-
The post has been there over an hour and not a forum post but an activity post so it would be front and center on the site. . To post it to trade alerts for a scalp is not practical, unfortunately by the time a trade alert is written and sent the pricing is gone. Always welcome to privately message me for more personal alerts and thoughts on what…[Read more]

Days like this must be tough on the core position…. but I imagine that your scalp trade will soften the blow. Besides, I’m sure any core short position will heal nicely in time….
-
Weeks like this are tough when UVXY is up 15% while the spy is up 1.5% . Nasdaq 2% … gotta keep the long game in mind I guess =/
-
Very unkind week and very anomalistic given the SPY surge as @red_penguin said. Short term pain for long-term gain, much agreed!
-
Its so terrible to watch VXX this week… It looks like the year has so many headwinds for volatility trading ig this continues. If VXX rises when market as well rises, then we have the dangers of bond market…and already very hot market is lookimg for a breather and may increAse volatility. Hope i am all wrong…i almost felt like i was better…[Read more]

As long as you’re positioned with strong liquidity Time is on your side. The complex has been far worse in the past and for similar stretches so it’s best to focus on the long term imo.

Shorted small lot $27.80, looking for simple scalp. Not core addition
-
I did the short the box thing. But with call spreads. Then bought Calls to hedge but with lower price. Been letting the long calls go 1 by 1 every little bit it goes up. First time doing it and I like it. It’s probably safer to do it this way.
-
Not sure it’s safer if you hold it overnight. But nice job! I just covered that scalp per my update! Good action even with a drawdown day to keep the portfolio with realized gains!
-
I’ve been covering my shorts in relative short periods (hard for me to hold a long term core), I consider the LOB strategy very similar, except it takes more MR, and you still need to time it at perfection, or you will see the profits diluting on one side or the other.
For me, just the fact that I need to think when to add or reduce my long is a…[Read more]-
I would agree with your comments Guillermo. We have a different operation as I manage a portfolio, demanding of me profits and to the extent I can actively manage strategies I’m obligated. But for individuals I certainly wouldn’t recommend the LOB, very difficult and needs precision timing.

-
I say safer cause it’s money I am willing to lose. Never intended to profit. Like my safety net. It’s still cost significantly less than the short. But now it’s more profit letting it go on a spike I did not expect.

All good!
