I keep hearing know what you own on stock forums. I figure that is why i took my $6000 loss in tvix and sold tuesday is cause i did not stay true to my thought of the g-7 meeting and was trading on another thrown around term hopeium. I was hoping for a spike in volatility out of the random instead of waiting for a more possible time for volatility. But look at volatility the day before the weekend of a known possible factor to the markets and i was buying three plus weeks out. An now it is unfortunate some people need to learn the hard way, and take a major loss.

    • @austinc93 Here’s my thoughts and possible teachings on the subject to consider: TVIX, UVXY, VXX and other VIX-ETPs are constructed with a correlation to the primary S&P 500 (SPX) options market such that OVER TIME, they will decay in price value. It’s not a hunch, it’s not a possibility, it is an inevitability. One can offer any given and many reasons as to why the share price will temporarily rise, but participating with the hope that one can time that rise for a reasonable entry and exit price while extrapolating a profit is the equivalent of rolling the dice. In other words, that’s not investing, that’s not even trading but rather gambling. If a trader starts using these instruments against their intended use, they’re using a faulty premise. The G-7 rational for owning long a VIX-ETP like TVIX only sets the trader up in the future for failures. The house always wins in Vegas and the house always wins with VIX-ETP price decay. Contango losses are forever, they can’t be recaptured. So yes, know what you own. These are not typical stocks, they have an actual construction that has no rooting in earnings or revenues. They will decay in price over time as noted in their prospectus and identified clearly in their charts. Don’t let the social media crowd (StockTwits/Twitter) lead you to believe that they are the majority of participants; they are the minority. Let me know if you have any questions!
